Our Philosophy About Helping Patients

Dr. Peter Berndt, M.D. is committed to helping people feel their mental, physical and emotional best. Whether working with individuals in private session, with company executives or employees in a stress management program, or patients in assisted living centers and nursing homes, or facilitating family support groups, Dr. Peter Berndt is committed to helping improve the lives of others.

Dr. Berndt believes that:

  • People have an innate wish and capability for balance and health. Dr. Berndt works to align himself with that inner force, supporting and encouraging healthy behaviors by resolving past traumatic experiences and by teaching stress management techniques.
  • Many people experience problems because they have never learned effective ways to know about and to express their feelings. They may have come from parental homes where expression of feeling was never encouraged or supported if not forbidden. Storing unexpressed feelings requires denial to achieve, and denial is a coping skill of very limited effectiveness.  Furthermore, denial tends to break down over time. Dr. Berndt assists his clients in recognizing feelings and expressing them in words in order to finish unfinished business from the past. The aim of this approach is try to resolve unresolved issues in such a way that they do not continue to trouble the patient over a  lifetime.
  • Psychotherapy, an educational process done in a non-critical and supportive environment, helps people learn new behaviors and ways of thinking. They can then successfully integrate those changes into their daily lives and create healthy habits.

Areas of concentration, among others, are:

  • Stress-related medical and psychiatric illness
  • Women’s issues
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • PTSD and related syndromes
  • Depression (including post-partum depression)
  • Anxiety
  • Pain syndromes
  • Pregnancy and fertility related issues
  • Clinical hypnosis for relaxation training, conditioning for childbirth, and treatment of habit disorders (smoking cessation, weight control, fear of flying and other phobias)
  • Work-related issues (stress management, conflict resolution, change management, team building, and creative/innovative-thinking workshops).
